THE ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE PROJECT

 STREET-WORK

We intend to have a street- work team combining both the staff members of Great Caravan Walks Foundation and volunteers. This team operates within a structured timetable whereby they go out to the streets to interact and talk to the children. We do identify, select and invite the boys & girls who are between the ages of 8 (Eight) to 14 (Fourteen) years and willing to join our center.

However, we afford assistance where possible to those others we are not able to recruit, by offering guidance, advice and recommending them to join other organizations that we collaborate with. We recruit these boys and girls to our reception center for a period of three to six months.

REHABILITATION

This is a process that enhances change of bad habit and negative attitudes, restores human dignity and self-esteem. This process starts from the reception center and continues in the main center. The activities (also called “Tools”) of rehabilitation include-

Ø  Guidance and counseling-both individual and group counseling in seminars and workshops

Ø  Guidance and sharing through daily day and night meetings

Ø  Formal Primary Education

Ø  Non-Formal Education

Ø  Extra- Curriculum activities such as Scouting, Sports, Drama and Music

Ø  Responsibility Training such as gardening, cleaning and cooking

WORKING WITH FAMILIES

In course of rehabilitation of the boys and girl’s we look into ways of working with the families.

The boys and girls drop from the families because of varied reasons. Such reasons are break-down of the families, irresponsible behavior of the parents, drugs, lack of school fees and provisions, unemployment, sicknesses, and negative peer influence among others. We try to see how to sort out the problems prevailing in the families.

We also restore good relationship between the child and the parent. We have a parent’s program that facilitates this.

Some of the activities involved in this program are helping the parents to do small businesses by teaching skills and make some savings, offering hairdressing salon courses, and knitting courses.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

We offer hairdressing and courses to young women at small fees and give certificates of attendances to enable them get jobs. We also offer the carpentry skills for the boys who are 16-22 years and willing to do carpentry and joinery courses.
